What does it even mean to “solve” cancer? And what are the best ways to move toward that goal? This is what our Global Policy Lab: Decoding Cancer project tried to understand over the course of six months. We’ve ended this project with a half-day event in Brussels to explore some of the most salient issues that we’ve come across.
POLITICO’s Global Policy Lab: Decoding Cancer, presented by Pfizer Oncology and IBM Watson Health, is a collaborative journalism project seeking to explore how patients, communities, policymakers and the private sectors are grappling with one of Europe’s most pressing health challenges. Started on October 4, 2018, this 20-week lab has tackled three different facets of the future of cancer policy: Research, Treatment and Long-term care.

Antonella Cardone
Director, European Cancer Patient Coalition (ECPC)
Antonella Cardone is the Director of the European Cancer Patient Coalition (ECPC). She has over twenty years of international activity in health, social and employment sectors. Prior to ECPC, Antonella was Executive Director of the Fit for Work Global Alliance (FfW GA) since 2013. The FfW GA is a multi-stakeholder coalition, led by The Work Foundation (Lancaster University, UK), which is advocating for change in health and work policy and practice to benefit people with chronic health conditions worldwide. Before joining the FfW GA, Cardone was Director of the Global Smokefree Partnership of the American Cancer Society, leading a movement of over 100 organisations supporting the development of smokefree laws in 40 countries. She has managed over 30 large EU projects involving many organisations across all EU member states, in sectors such as health, employment, social inclusion, human rights, education, training and urban regeneration. Cardone has also led, among others, projects at the World Heart Federation, The International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, and the European League Against Rheumatism.
Peter Liese
Member (EPP, Germany), European Parliament
Peter Liese has been a member of the European Parliament for the CDU, part of European People’s Party (EPP) group, since 1994. He is the EPP Coordinator in the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and a substitute member in the committee on budgets. He is also a member in the delegation for relations with the countries of Central America and in the delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly. Before being elected as an MEP, Liese was a member of the Bestwig local council in 1989-94. Liese practiced medicine in a public hospital and in development aid projects in Central America. He was a ward doctor in a children’s clinic in Paderborn and worked in a joint practice from 1994 to 2002. Liese has a doctorate from the Human Genetic Institute of the University of Bonn. He did his medical studies in Marburg, Aachen and Bonn.
Alojz Peterle
MEP (EPP, Slovenia), President of the MEPs Against Cancer Group (MAC)
Alojz Peterle is a member of the European Parliament for the European People’s Party since 2004, the same year as Slovenia became an EU Member State. Since being elected MEP, Mr Peterle has been a Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and a substitute Member of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI). He is a Co-chair of the ENVI Health Working Group and the President of the “Members against Cancer” group (MAC). Before that, he was Member of the Presidium of the European Convention on the Future of Europe in 2002-2003, Chair of the European Affairs Committee in the Slovenian National Assembly from 1997 to 2004 and Vice-President of the European Union of Christian Democrats from 1996 to 1999. Peterle held the position of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia in 1993-1994. In May 1990, Peterle became the first democratically elected Prime Minister of Slovenia after DEMOS coalition won the parliamentary elections. Before that, he was elected chairman of the newly founded Slovenian Christian Democratic party (SKD).
Lieve Wierinck
MEP (ALDE, Belgium)
Lieve Wierinck is a member of the European Parliament for the Belgian Open VLD party, part of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe since 2016 when she replaced Philippe De Backer. In the European Parliament, she focuses primarily on research and development, energy, economy and monetary affairs. Between 2011 and 2014, Wierinck was a federal member of the Belgian parliament, where she focused mainly on public health, the environment and emancipation. Until 2016 she also chaired Open VLD Women. She took her first steps in politics as a party leader for Open VLD Zaventem between 1994 and 2000. She has a degree in pharmaceutical sciences from the VUB and had her own pharmacy in Zaventem for almost thirty years.
Ashley Woolmore
Initiative Lead, Collaboration for Oncology Data in Europe (CODE)
Ashley Woolmore is the Initiative Lead for CODE. His main interest is facilitating the generation of insight from real-world data sources to drive change in healthcare delivery and policy. He is particularly focussed on cancer and its treatment, and innovative approaches to data integration and analysis. Woolmore also has substantial experience of partnership and collaborative working models.
Wendy Yared

Wendy Yared, is the Director of the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL).
