Improving Diagnosis Is Urgent: Multidisciplinary Effort Required
PICTURE 1Diagnostic errors are medicine’s blind spot, and need urgent action, according to a report, Improving Diagnosis in Health Care, released on 22 September by the U.S. Institute of Medicine’s Committee on Diagnostic Error in Health Care. Other types of medical errors have traditionally received more attention in healthcare, but the spotlight needs to turn on diagnosis, they say: “Improving the diagnostic process is not only possible, but it also represents a moral, professional, and public health imperative.” Multidisciplinary teamwork, with radiologists and pathologists as integral members of the diagnostic team, leadership and patient involvement are all required to improve the situation.

Diagnostic error is the failure to (a) establish an accurate and timely explanation of the patient’s health problem(s) or (b) communicate that...

Patient Emergencies in Radiology: How Frequent?
PICTURE 2When hospital patients outside the ICU become unstable, many facilities have medical emergency teams (MET) in place to rapidly respond. But are events warranting MET calls more common in a radiology department (RD) than in a general ward? Lora Ott, PhD, RN, Assistant Professor, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and colleagues have published the results of their research into this area in the Journal of Radiology Nursing. And the finding that such events are more common in the RD, when adjusted to length of stay, have led to increased awareness by imaging department staff of the potential for patient instability in the RD, Ott told HealthManagement.org. Previous research by Ott and colleagues found that risk factors for... READ MORE/COMMENT

EUSOBI 2015: Implications of Dense Breasts
PICTURE 3 Breast density remains a hot topic in radiology, and although much is known about the impact of breast density on mammographic screening, what to do with that information is not always clear. Polarisation of opinion on the pros and cons of mammographic screening has left women confused, and hindered early detection of breast cancer, according to Professor Murray Rebner, Immediate Past President, Society of Breast Imaging. HealthManagement.org spoke to Prof. Rebner in advance of his presentation at the EUSOBI Annual Scientific Meeting next month on “Dense breasts: Implications for the patient and the radiologist.”

Legislation to inform women about their breast density is now in place in many states in the USA. Are primary care doctors...

EUSOBI 2015: Breast Screening in Brazil
PICTURE 4 Many constraints exist when it comes to implementing breast screening in Brazil, according to Dr. Fabiola Kestelman, a breast radiologist from Rio de Janeiro, who will be speaking at the EUSOBI annual scientific meeting in London next month. While national guidelines recommend screening between 50 and 69 years of age, every two years, there is no nationally organised programme, only individual municipal initiatives and local programmes set up by nongovernment organisations. The difference between public and private systems and lack of financial resources means that treatment may be delayed. HealthManagement.org caught up with Dr. Kestelman in an email interview to find out more about the current situation. READ MORE/COMMENT

ACC Focus on Cardiac Imaging Appropriate Use
PICTURE 5 Cardiac imaging growth has been on the decline over the past 10 years, indicating increased adherence to appropriate use criteria (AUC) for imaging tests, according to a Leadership Page article in the Journal of American College of Cardiology.

"Physicians who have been provided with AUC data on their imaging use have recognised their shared responsibility for appropriate use of imaging services and have improved their practice patterns," writes Dr. Robert Shor, Secretary and Chair of the Board of Governors of the American College of Cardiology.

However, he notes that physicians continue to face some major challenges, including prior authorisation and claim denials by payers. Previous...
