Mayo Clinic's 7th Annual Anesthesiology Update 2024 presents the latest updates at the forefront of anesthesiology that you can apply to your practice immediately. Topics include preoperative preparation of the surgical patient, the patient with liver disease, lung transplant patients, obstetric analgesic techniques, care of the congenital heart patient in the operating room; care of the ambulatory patient in the chronic pain clinic, pharmacogenetics for anesthesia, and quality improvement techniques. Target Audience

This course is designed for practicing anesthesiologists, CRNAs, anesthesiology assistants, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and all other perioperative healthcare professionals.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

• Review the scope of staffing shortages in healthcare and perioperative medicine.
• Explore the impact of perioperative and medical staffing shortages on patient safety, outcomes, and provider sustainability.
• Examine anesthesia patient safety concerns related to non-operating room anesthesia and disruptive technologies.
• Discuss the management of patients with left-sided valvular disease presenting for non-cardiac surgery.
• Formulate an anesthetic care plan for a woman with heart disease undergoing a vaginal and cesarean delivery, including appropriate monitoring, labor analgesia, and plans for cardiac and obstetric emergencies.
• Recognize differences in ACLS for pregnant patients compared to non-pregnant patients.
• Review best practices for trauma care of the parturient.
• Explore the role of POCUS in obstetric anesthesia.
• Describe the role of pediatric anesthesiology in global anesthesia care.
• Discuss new pharmaceuticals in pediatric anesthesia care.
• Discuss best practices for the management of patients presenting for acute stroke.
• Review the anesthetic implications of patients taking GLP1 agonists in the perioperative period.
• Discuss best practices for management of anemia in the perioperative period.
• Describe the contemporary management of heart and lung transplant patients in the ICU.
• Discuss the perioperative use of caffeine for the management of withdrawal, pain, and headache.
• Discuss the perioperative management of patients on buprenorphine.

Shepler's Ferry to Mackinac Island can be accessed by driving to Mackinaw City (on Michigan’s lower peninsula) or St. Ignace (upper peninsula). Ample parking is available at Shepler's Ferry and attendees have options that include:

Mackinaw City – Overnight Parking
Premium On-Site Parking $45.00 / night:
 Our premium parking option allows you to park right at the dock parking lot. You will receive a parking ticket when you enter the lot and you will be required to pay as you exit for your return home. Before parking, come to our unloading area, where we will tag your bags for your hotel. Then you can find a spot in the lot adjacent our dock. Save time and buy your ferry tickets online and go right from your car to the boat, skipping the ticket office line completely.
Standard Off-Site Parking $20.00 / night: If you choose our standard overnight parking option, first come to the dock to unload bags and bikes. You will need to go to the ticket office to pay for your parking prior to heading to that lot. The lot is approximately four blocks away, with continuous tram service offered back from the lot. Our ticket office cast members will give you directions to the lot when you pick up your parking pass. Please plan to arrive one hour prior to your desired ferry departure time.

St. Ignace – Overnight Parking
Premium Parking $40.00 / night:
 On-site at the dock (gate ticket required for entry/exit) 
Standard Parking $20.00 / night: All of our parking in St. Ignace is right at the dock. You will receive a parking ticket when you enter the dock area and you will be required to pay for the number of nights parked upon exiting for your departure home.

Mackinac Island Airport (MCD):
Mackinac Island Airport’s 3,500-foot lighted, paved runway is capable of accommodating private and charter aircraft. The airport is one mile from Grand Hotel. Horse-drawn taxi service is available from the airport to Grand Hotel. For more information, please call (906) 847-3323.

Charter Airlines:

Pellston Regional Airport (PLN):
Pellston Regional Airport is located 15 miles south of Mackinaw City, MI where you can board the ferry to the island. Air taxi service between the Pellston Regional Airport and Mackinac Island Airport is available 24 hours a day. For information, call Great Lakes Air at (906) 643-7327.

Chippewa County International Airport (CIU):
Chippewa County International Airport is 35 miles north of St. Ignace, MI where you can board the ferry to the island. Air taxi service between the Chippewa County International Airport and Mackinac Island Airport is available by calling (906) 285-6727.  Shuttle service from Chippewa County International -  Airport Northern Transport & Shuttle (906) 430-5337

Limousine and Shuttle Service:
Mackinaw Shuttle  (231) 539-7005 is available at the Pellston, Michigan Airport for taxi service between the Pellston Airport and the Mackinaw City ferry docks on a 24-hour basis. This service is also available on a charter basis. Reservations are recommended.

Northern Transport & Shuttle (906) 430-5337 is available from Chippewa County International Airport to St. Ignace ferry docks. Reservations are recommended.
